Incumbent will monitor console workstation operations to effectively manage data coming in through multiple computer screens. Monitor job streams. Use scheduling software to prioritize jobs to minimize conflicts. Notify appropriate contacts of job stream failures and carry out remedial actions as requested. Monitor environmental, fire, and security systems. Handle Help Desk calls and submit work orders during Help Desk off hours. Monitor multiple platforms to ensure satisfactory production client service including mainframe, state websites, interactive voice response (IVR) phone lines, and HIPAA mandated web-based systems to ensure the systems are functioning and make appropriate contacts to report malfunctions. Maintain electronic logs. Serve as a system operator for IPL's (Initial Program Load) to shut down the mainframe and bring it back up. Assist in performing various backups. Assist with the Alerts process.

New staff in the position are assigned a mentor and provided hands-on, written and verbal training support during the 6-month probationary period as part of a formal training program.

Incumbent will be assigned to the Third Shift (12:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.); however, incumbent may be assigned to work on any of the three shifts while in this position. The computer room is operated 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Incumbent will be required to work some holidays and weekends. Work will be performed in a computer center that involves exposure to noise and viewing data over multiple computer screens.

Knowledge of:
  • general computer concepts and operations.
Skill to:
  • prepare and maintain a sequential, written record of activity performed on a shift;
  • accurately interpret computer-issued error messages and take appropriate action;
  • operate all computer center equipment;
  • communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
  • escalate client issues to other teams.
Ability to:
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships;
  • read and respond to messages scrolling across a computer screen.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
