Senior Tax Manager – SALT (State & Local Tax) – Income Tax

Location : Los Angeles, South San Francisco, or Irvine, CA (Hybrid)
Industry : Public Accounting / Professional Services

A prestigious and nationally recognized public accounting and consulting firm is actively seeking a Senior Tax Manager to lead high-level engagements within their growing State and Local Tax (SALT) practice. Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary Range : $166,000 – $190,000 (based on experience)

Schedule & Work Expectations

  • Full-time position with core hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • During busy season , expect to work 45–60 hours per week
  • During non-tax season , the average workload is 40–45 hours per week

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and review multistate income tax returns (C Corps, S Corps, LLCs, Partnerships), including nexus and apportionment analysis.
  • Manage and execute technical tax research projects, including audit support and refund opportunity reviews.
  • Serve as a go-to resource for complex state income and sales tax issues for internal teams and clients.
  • Represent clients before taxing authorities during examinations and audits.
  • Collaborate with leadership to drive client strategy and maintain excellent service delivery.
  • Oversee, mentor, and develop junior tax professionals; participate in internal training and evaluations.
  • Contribute to practice growth through thought leadership, client relationship management, and community involvement.

Qualifications

  • Must be a licensed CPA in good standing.
  • 8–12 years of public accounting experience with increasing responsibility in SALT.
  • Minimum 2 years representing clients before taxing authorities.
  • Minimum 2 years in a formal supervisory or managerial role.
  • Bachelor’s in Accounting required; Master’s in Taxation preferred.
  • Strong command of state tax law, nexus, apportionment, and sales/use tax issues.
  • Proven ability to lead complex tax engagements from start to finish.
  • Must meet continuing education requirements (40 hours/year).
